There are some beautiful walks around the Ria Formosa estuary and organised walks in the Algarve countryside, with orange groves, pine woods, rivers and breathtaking views. The natural habitat is ideal for bird watching.
The old towns of Silves, Tamira and Faro are close by, as are typical Portuguese potteries, while the town of Almancil has a cultural centre.

1. Golf
Portugal's leading golf courses are to be found in the Algarve, including ten within easy access of the hotel, and are of world-championship standard.

2. The Beach
Miles of superb, golden, sandy beaches are a sunbather's paradise. Every kind of watersport is available, including excellent sailing, with remote coves to drop anchor and relax in, marinas such as Vilamoura and picturesque fishing villages.
Hire a dingy or charter a yacht and experience the excitement of sailing the Atlantic. Deep-sea fishing is also on offer for those who want to wrestle with swordfish, ray, tuna, shark or snapper. Waterskiing, windsurfing, and scuba diving are also available

3. Horseriding
Horse riding is one of the most exhilarating ways to explore the countryside, from the luxuriant pine woods to almond groves and soft sands. There are dozens of good stables stocked with Anglo-Arab and Lusitano horses.
4. Tennis
For tennis fans there are excellent courts throughout the Algarve, with several specialised centres such as the David Lloyd Tennis Centre near Quinta do Lago.

7. Faro
Visit Faro with its lively cafés, smart shops, cobblestoned streets and grand houses with wrought-iron balconies. In the Cidade Velha (Old Town) you can browse around the 13th-century cathedral and bishop's palace.
8. Cabo de São Vincente
Take a day trip to Cabo de São Vincente - the southwesternmost point of Europe - with its famous lighthouse and dramatic views of sea and cliffs. Nelson defeated the French off this cape in 1797.

The old Moorish capital of Silves is well worth visiting for its sandstone castle and battlements standing proudly against a backdrop of rugged hills.
10. Monchique
Monchique - a quaint Roman spa town, with picturesque 17th-century architecture, set high in the hills. The summit of Monchique offers superb views towards the coast.
